Open Office

As a person who constantly relies on a good word processing program, I am going to go against the norm and tell everyone to quit using Word.  I have more formatting issues in Word than any other program.  Maybe it’s that I’ve not learned it as well as I should, but it’s funny how I don’t have these issues in other programs.

Anyway, I want to recommend Open Office to anyone who needs a good office suite program.  You can save things in any Microsoft format, so there’s not really much of a compatability issue unless you use some very sophisticated features.  So far, I have had no complaints from my clients and it is all I have used for months.

For some reason, Microsoft Works no longer works very well on Vista.  I never had a problem with it until I owned a computer with Vista as the operating system.  Why Microsoft ever came out with such a thing, I will never know.  XP worked just fine for me.  I’m also not real keen on the new ways to use Microsoft Word.  I was fine with the regular tabs at the top of the window.  Now it’s on this “ribbon” format and I just cannot get used to it no matter how hard I try.  I work much better the old-fashioned way.

So if you’re an old stick in the mud like me, go to www.openoffice.org and download the program.  It’s free online.  I purchased my first version for twenty dollars at Wal-Mart before I knew that it was free online.  This time, I just didn’t feel like searching for my software after the move, so downloaded and installed it and am so happy to have it on my new computer.  It’s caused me no problems and I’m not confused by anything fancy.  Sometimes simple is just better.

As far as the move, we’re here.  I’ve been outsourcing a lot of my transcription lately, but still proofread every document that comes into me before it’s submitted to my clients.  It’s just easier to do things that way while we’re all adjusting and both kids are at home with me.  Silence is a rare commodity in this house.

 Thanks again for reading!
